"However, Prof Shamrahayu Abdul Aziz, a constitutional law lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia, said although the Ruler did not have the power to overrule the court’s decision, it did not mean that his opinion should not be considered.
"In Malaysia, the Agong is not just the head of Islam but is also a symbol of unity."If the Ruler says the word 'allah' should be confined to just Muslims, then it should be regarded so by the courts out of respect."
She opined that the best way to solve this problem may not be through the court system but via negotiations.
"We now know that it is possible for a court ruling to do more harm than good. The court has made something contradictory to what was generally accepted by the masses before."We now realise that there are 'unwritten rules' to the constitution. We also know now that there are things we should not go to court for."
Shamrahayu said she is not instigating the public to disrespect the court’s decision but if the Herald issue cannot be resolved via a court ruling based on the constitution, and the King’s advice does not hold the force of law, then what's left as a possibility to resolve this stalemate is the spirit of the Malaysian people themselves.
"I believe only Malaysians can solve this unique problem. We have to be tolerant and negotiate among ourselves to bring back the 'peace and harmony formula' we once enjoyed."
